The Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo, $11,000, to develop a series of family events for children and their parents to explore the gardens, while reinforcing math and science concepts during summer months. Students will enjoy studying birds, butterflies and flora and fauna.
Grandy Primary School in Camden County, $3,000, to integrate math, science and technology skills to develop a school-wide recycling program. First students will explore their own carbon footprint, and determine how they can make a difference by changing personal habits. Then they will expand the program school-wide to encourage students and staff to 'reduce, recycle and reuse.'
Perquimans Central School, $1,000, for special-needs students to learn about animals and their environments through a variety of media, then taking a field trip to Port Discover and Elizabeth City State University Planetarium.
Perquimans Middle School, $1,000, to allow students to use Lab Quest handheld units to take environmental readings including pH and treasure in the field as well as record and graph data.
