Arlington Underground Lines
and Substation Upgrades
Printer Version Print-Friendly Version

Dominion Virginia Power is committed to providing safe and reliable power to customers, and this sometimes requires the construction of additional electric facilities.

In northern Arlington County, redevelopment is increasing electrical demands. Several of our existing substations require alternative sources of power to increase reliability, and the Clarendon area requires additional substation facilities to meet the growing demand for power.

Project Description

  • Dominion will redesign and rebuild the substation located at Fairfax Drive and Wilson Boulevard (3245 Wilson Boulevard). The rebuilt substation will include a new containment wall that will complement the surrounding environment.

  • Dominion will install a 230 kV underground line from the existing substation at 1033 Nelson Street to the rebuilt substation at 3245 Wilson Boulevard. This line will be approximately 2200 feet (0.4 mile±) long.

  • Dominion also proposes to construct 69 kV underground lines from both the Nelson Street and Wilson Boulevard substations to the Rosslyn Substation at 1850 N. Moore Street. These lines will be a little over 2.5 miles long.

The first phase of the project includes the new 230 kV underground line and the new Wilson Blvd. substation, and is scheduled to be completed by October 2008. The Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) has authorized construction of the 230 kV underground line between the Nelson St. and Wilson Blvd substations.
