Take Care Of Your Meter

Your meter is the point where natural gas comes into your home. Please treat it with care.

Here are some safety tips to help keep your gas meter in good working condition this winter:

  • Have leaky gutters cleaned and repaired to keep melting snow and ice from dripping on the meter.
  • Never allow ice to cover your gas meter.
  • If you find your meter covered in ice, do not try to remove the ice by any means. Instead, call us at 1-800-362-7557.
  • Use caution when shoveling snow, plowing or snow blowing to avoid hitting the meter or piling snow against it.
  • Remove soft snow buildup on your meter gently, using a broom or your hand, not a shovel.

Keep your furnace area clear

To prevent accidental fires, please avoid storing paint stripper, bleach, or salt for melting ice near the furnace.

The chlorine or fluorine in these items can lead to furnace corrosion.

Also, vacuum around the furnace - especially around the burner compartment - to prevent dust and soot buildup.

Keep your air vents clear

To help prevent carbon monoxide in your home or office, remove excessive accumulation of snow and ice on the exhaust and air vents of your gas appliances.
