FAQs About Surge Protection

General FAQs

What is a power surge?

A power surge is a sharp increase in voltage. Surges can occur on your electric, phone or even cable TV lines. They are often caused by lightning but can be associated with many other types of uncontrollable events such as hurricanes, tornadoes, ice storms, vehicle accidents involving utility equipment, etc. The most common type of surges are caused by the starting of motor-driven equipment such as your refrigerator, air-conditioner, furnace or garbage disposal.

How does the warranty work on the plug-in devices?

The manufacturer's comprehensive warranty offers complete protection from power surges. Any equipment damaged by an AC power, cable or telephone surge, while connected to a properly installed Dominion Virginia Power surge protector, will be repaired or replaced.

Why can't I get appliance surge protection service if I live somewhere other than Virginia?

Dominion Virginia Power is not allowed by law to offer the program in any other state. This is because the product requires work on the electric meter and we are only permitted to perform work on meters we own. Dominion Virginia Power owns only the meters for its Virginia customers.

Why do I need plug-in units in addition to the meter-mounted device?

The meter base surge device can't protect surges from entering on phone or cable lines, so plug-in units are necessary for electronics like computers, fax machines, modems, TVs, VCRs and stereos.
